Privacy Policy

Scriptura (“Scriptura”, “the bot”) is a Discord Bible bot operated individually by Prince (“we”, “us”, “our”). This Privacy Policy explains what information Scriptura collects, how it is used, and the choices you have.

By using Scriptura, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this Privacy Policy.

1. Information We Collect​

Scriptura is designed to collect as little data as possible. We only collect information needed to provide core functionality and user preferences.

1.1 Data You Provide Through Use​

When you use Scriptura commands, you may enter text such as verse references or search phrases (e.g., “John 3:16” or a keyword search). Scriptura uses this input to fetch results from Bible data providers (see Section 4).

1.2 Data We Store​

We store the following limited data in MongoDB:

  • Discord User ID (to associate settings with the correct user)
  • User Preferences, including:
    • Default Bible translation selection
    • Verse display preferences (how verses are formatted/presented)

We do not store server (guild) settings at this time. Preferences are stored per-user.

1.3 Data We Do Not Collect​

Scriptura does not intentionally collect or store:

  • Server/Guild IDs
  • Channel IDs
  • Message content beyond what is needed to process a command in the moment
  • IP addresses (your IP may be visible to Discord and your network provider; Scriptura does not store it)
  • Persistent analytics profiles or tracking identifiers unrelated to bot operation

2. How We Use Information​

We use the information described above only to:

  • Provide Scriptura’s features (verse lookup, passage retrieval, search)
  • Remember your preferences (translation and display settings)
  • Maintain reliability and troubleshoot issues (e.g., diagnosing errors)

We do not sell your data.

Depending on your location, our use of information may be based on:

  • Providing the service you requested (e.g., storing preferences to enhance your experience)
  • Legitimate interests such as maintaining and improving bot reliability and preventing abuse
  • Your consent, where required by applicable law

4. Sharing and Third-Party Services​

4.1 Bible API Providers​

To fulfill your requests, Scriptura sends your user-entered query text (such as verse references or search phrases) to third-party Bible API provider(s) to retrieve scripture content.

  • Only the information necessary to obtain a response is sent (the query itself).
  • We do not intentionally send your stored preferences or other personal data beyond what is needed to process the request.

These providers may process your request in accordance with their own privacy policies and terms.

4.2 No Other Third-Party Sharing​

Other than the Bible API provider(s) used to return results, we do not share your stored data with third parties, except:

  • To comply with legal obligations, enforce rights, or respond to lawful requests
  • To protect users, the public, or the security of Scriptura

5. Data Retention​

We keep your stored preferences for as long as needed to provide the preference feature, or until you request deletion.

If you stop using Scriptura, your preferences may remain stored unless you request removal.

6. Your Rights and Choices​

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Request access to the data we store about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your stored preferences

When requesting deletion, include your Discord User ID (or enough information for us to identify your record). We may ask for reasonable verification to ensure we’re deleting the correct data.

7. Children’s Privacy​

Scriptura is not intended for children under 13. If you are under 13, do not use Scriptura. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us information, contact us and we will take steps to delete the data.

8. Security​

We use reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect the limited data we store. However, no method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. International Use​

Scriptura is operated from the United States. If you access Scriptura from outside the U.S., you understand that information may be processed and stored in the U.S. or other locations where our service providers operate.

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy​

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the Effective date at the top. Continued use of Scriptura after changes means you accept the updated policy.
